The Department of Physical Education was started in the year of 1963 with M.A. in Physical Education. The department has emerged as one of the premier centres of Physical Education in India. It has acquired a prominent status in the country and has earned several distinctions during its existence. The Department offers B.P.Ed. (Two Year), M.P.Ed. (Two Years) and Ph.D. programmes in Physical Education.

In line with the University mission, the department has the aim of educating the "whole-person" and to produce quality teachers of physical education to serve the profession of physical education and sports in different capacities. By improving our academic programmes and services to the University and local community, we pledge to continually strive for academic excellence and to maintain our leadership role in our profession.

The department uses rigorous multifaceted pedagogy for creating positive attitude, practical understanding and teaching skills among the students. It is compulsory for every student to undergo for an internship (Internal and External teaching practice) at the end of every semester so that students can use their class-room learning to refine their teaching skills and to become able teachers. The department is well-equipped with the modern techniques of teaching and teaching aids. The performance of the student is continuously evaluated through group discussions, projects, written assignments and class tests in addition to their end-semester examinations.
